Final Share of the 2023 Summer CSA Season
Change is in the air for sure this morning! A chill in the damp grass and bright colors surround us in the sunshine. Autumn has arrived and we focus on transitions.
Another great week prepping for the final share. We had a blast dancing around the pumpkin patch finding the prettiest pumpkins for the shares this week. Lots of beauties out there and it truly is 1 of our favorite crops to harvest. We filled a truckload and even had to sneak a few extra in the cab and Maeve had to hold one too on the way home! We checked every single variety of winter squash and made the group decision that they were just not quite ready. So close but who wants to eat an almost-ripe squash…? Not us, so major squash overload will be in the bonus season offerings in the future.

Our helper Al is busy with the garden cleanup and landscape fabric and irrigation are being lifted and the compost pile grows. We had perfect weather for late-season harvest. 2 more rows of sweet potatoes will be dug next week and lots of carrots to pull and the gorgeous spinach in hoop 2 will continue to produce but with the change of season our duties slow.
We loved this season. So many “best ever” crops and rotations strong and spot on. The drought made life a bit challenging but the irrigation ran around the clock and we had our focus dialed in. We are grateful for this life we have and our CSA family that makes it all possible.
Big news that some of you may already know as happy news tends to travel fast. We purchased a building in downtown Baraboo. A quiet dream we have had for some time. So, transitions for sure. It is a large space we hope to share and will be pondering many fun options this winter. We are unsure what the future brings for us but excited to see how it all shakes out and will share updates along the way.

WHAT IS IN YOUR SHARE-Head lettuce, spinach, shallots, beets, peppers, ornamental pumpkin, brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, leeks, ornamental/decorative mini pumpkins, russet potatoes, parsley, and choice of a pie pumpkin or spaghetti squash
Head lettuce-2 great varieties harvested this week out of hoop 1. Delicious and so pretty too. A butter head added to the full shares this week that I know are on the favorite list of a few members! Enjoy.

Spinach-Super early morning harvest this week as the warm temps and bright sun make the hoop house heat up quickly. Sweet juicy leaves, triple rinsed with great flavor. We love lightly wilted spinach at dinner in the Fall.

Shallots-A bounty of shallots this year. We dried them under the shade cloth in the greenhouse. Delicious mild flavor and super long storage life.

Beets-Sweet! A nice big bag. A mix of the traditional and a beautiful heirloom golden beet called badger flame.

Italian Fry Peppers-I cannot believe the peppers harvest this season and cannot believe we still have peppers this late in the season! Amazing and what a gift to snack on this fresh picked sweet delight in October.

Pumpkins-Quite the Haul! All lined up and ready in the driveway again this week for CSA members to select a favorite.

Brussels Sprouts-Gorgeous plants this season. Nice and tall and we snuck from the bottoms of the stalks again this week.

Sweet potatoes-The winter staple around our house. Fantastic harvest so far and more to come.

Leeks-Our helper Al pulled the last of the leek crop from the garden this past week and we trimmed and cleaned them up in the shade. Longest we have ever grown.

Russet potatoes-Beauties for sure!!! and 2 perfect hearts are tucked in as a surprise for 2 members as a treat.

Pie Pumpkin OR spaghetti squash-members may choose.
Flat leaf Parsley-A delicious addition to winter soups or stews.

We will take a week or 2 off to get the last of the crops out of the ground and tackle clean up and then go into the storage bonus shares! See you soon.
