The tomatoes are in! Always the last HUGE! time consuming job on our long planting list. 420+ plants all nestled in the trellised rows.

Scott got the shade cloth on the new hoop house before that big blast of heat rolled in and it sure makes a difference.

At least 10 degrees cooler in there. We notice the peas are flowering, the garlic is just about ready to “scape” and early broccoli is starting to head and the cabbages too. Hard to believe but it is summer!

Snack Pack

WHAT IS IN YOUR SHARE-BASIL PLANT, PEA SHOOTS, HEAD LETTUCE, SPINACH, RADISHES, PAC CHOI AND CARROTS!

Basil Plant- (2 plants in full share)-Maeve and Jennifer planted the basil plants and did the upgrading to larger pots this Spring. Genovese variety. Plant in the ground or in a pot to enjoy all summer long.

Pea Shots-Delicious fresh pea flavor. Stalks are tender and sweet. Place on a kitchen window sill on a plate and water as needed. Snip vines and add to fresh salads or garnish soups or stir fries. Compost when all vines are snipped.

Head Lettuce-Another great harvest of lettuce out of Hoop 1. Assorted varieties were harvested and we mixed it up a bit and assorted varieties went into the shares. Best early season lettuce we have ever grown and we hope it continues all summer long.

And then up for a quick tripple dip in the cool dunk tanks.

Spinach-A great final harvest of our Spring Spinach. 100’s of pounds came off the 2 rows this season and we were amazed. We picked the last crop very early in the morning and then pulled the plants and prepped the area for summer beets. Spinach will return in Fall.

Radishes-We harvested radishes from an outside planting and inside hoop 2 this week. 2 crops french breakfast and white icicle. Both snappy with a bit of heat.

Pac choi-I LOVE! pac choi….it is Maeve’s “go to” snack. She chomps down on the delicious stems. We add it to all our salads, love it wilted down with olive oil and garlic and also added to broth at the last minute. We harvested 2 varieties this week…and I was in such a rush to get it cut in the morning heat I forgot to take a picture of the beautiful green variety (in full share only)….so including image below of an earlier harvest….

Carrots-1st Carrot harvest of the season. These carrots were seeded in early March. A slow go but so worth it! Enjoy!! We have big carrot goals this year. Hopefully LOTS! of carrots throughout the summer. Maeve calls these “real” carrots because of their great carrot flavor.

Summer Share #1 May 28th

Well, we just keep rolling….a fantastic Spring for us in the gardens and we did a fast hustle the week break between last Spring Share and 1st Summer Share. 650 pounds of seed potatoes went in….1800 leeks-triple that number for onions, 350 pepper plants, 100 eggplant and seeded in the hoop houses with carrots and leafy greens. The cutting celery and parsley went in as an “end of day job” and we put a long row of tomatillos in just for fun.

A second wave of broccoli and cabbage was seeded in and Maeve helped upgrade all the basil to larger containers. Scott got the tomato trellis up and tomato planting will be our last big job.

We are loving the new hoop house! Early carrots and beets seeded in and the spinach is the best we have ever grown. We are looking forward to a happy STRONG summer with bountiful, delicious produce.

Spinach-delicious thick walled sweet spinach from our new hoop house. We are thrilled. Nice big bags for the Snack pack share and even more for Full. We love it wilted as a side with dinner and make tons of spinach balls and patties. Enjoy!

Pac Choi-Hoop 1 was loaded with assorted pac choi for 1st share. We eat it raw as a snack and love it added to broth. Full share also received a bag of cut mini itty bitty pac choi too…

April 14th Spring #4 FINAL SHARE

A delayed update as we have been hustling in the gardens….

A fantastic week again. All good news. We row covered alllllll the outside planting and inside too in the hoop houses for 5 nights to protect from frost. A huge job to get them under cover but worth it. We lost nothing to the freezing temps and we are grateful. Always a bit risky putting in the early crops.

Covering up the outside crops….we had to haul tons of rocks to hold the row cover down.

And uncovering all when the danger of frost over.

We are glad the extreme cold seems to be behind us now and we can carry on with direct planting in the gardens.

The huge job for the week was onion planting. We start our onions from seed that we start in late February. We wait and plant a bit later than most to let the seedlings bulk up a little. MUCH easier to transplant. Years ago when we use to plant early with itty bitty seedlings Scott said to me “it is like sticking yard down a hole”. Very funny to me…but a true statement and not easy to do. So we wait a few weeks and the job is much easier.

4000+ onions went out this past week-Sweet, storage and a few fun early varieties too.

The focus is to “get the garden in” and hours of transplanting is how we organize our days.

Beans have been seeded in, long rows of kale and kohlrabi out and cucumbers seeded in for later transplants. We are on a roll and look forward to a productive week ahead getting the last of the big crops in and slowly transition the hoop houses to summer production.

WHAT IS IN YOUR SHARE.

Spinach-We are blown away with the Spinach this Spring. HUGE!! juicy sweet leaves and 97 pounds again. Our best Spring Spinach harvest ever. Enjoy.

Turnips-More of these little springtime gems. Best raw. Sweet flavor.

April 7th Spring Share #3

And the week flew by just like that. A delayed post. After the CSA delivery schedule for the shares yesterday we had to cover all exterior plantings with row cover to protect from frost-we worked until dark. A wonderful week in the gardens. We transplanted 2 varieties of early broccoli out and 3 different cabbages. Over 3000 plants went in over 2 days.

Scott got the irrigation all set up and the last of the plastic down.

We seeded in radish beds and had a huge turnip harvest from hoop 1 which we quickly reseeded with leafy green mixes for Summer CSA.

And by the next day 3 leafy green mixes seeded in.

Maeve and I finished upgrading the peppers and started all the watermelons and zucchini The greenhouse is FULL. We wait for this coldsnap to pass and then we can sprawl out a bit.

And the bounty continues….asian mix, baby kale mix, beta mix (baby chard/beet tops), mini head lettuce, turnips, and another variety of spinach.

Asian mix-A second cutting off the crop we harvested 2 weeks ago. Snappy and spicy in flavor. Raw or saute. It is delicious.

Baby Kale Mix- love this mix lightly wilted with a bit of olive oil. Delicious in broth too.

Spinach-A new variety for us we wanted to try. HUGE leaves….great spinach variety for fresh eating in salads or smoothy drinks. Sweet flavor.

Turnips-A fantastic harvest. Spring turnips are the best. Texture is like butter and the flavor is sweet and juicy. Raw is best but can be stirfried.

April 30th Spring Share #2

A fantastic week for us! We continue to be blown away with the greens in both hoop houses. It was all we could do to keep up with the harvesting and washing. We are thrilled and always chuckle how it takes us a bit to get our garden bodies and minds dialed back in….routines need to be reestablished and our bodies are a bit stiff. But we are happy. Scott got all the plastic down for the rows and is getting all the irrigation lines in place.

Plastic is done and Scott is “scratching” between the rows to level it out. The beds are slightly raised and makes a trough between that is a pain to walk in all summer long if not leveled. Hose in front is our temporary feed to Hoop 2.

Tons of lettuce and pac choi was transplanted out in both hoop houses and we continue to seed in next rotations in the greenhouse. The massive spinach harvest out of hoop 2 took over 5 hours and Scott said 2 days to wash it all after that!….97 pounds. We were estimating 60-65 pounds. It is juicy and sweet and near perfect.

Scott finishing up the spinach harvest. The leaves you see in the rows are the very 1st leaves the plants shot out and they are tough leathery and lime green in color. Not tasty. We pull them off and discard to so they do not decline in the beds.

Hoop 2 was planted over existing gardens and even with a semi load of organic compost mixed in weeds are a challenge. It was expected but we realize how spoiled we are in Hoop 1 that is well established and weed free. So, every spare second we are weeding in there.

Leaf Lettuce-Sweet delicate leaves. Leaf lettuce tastes best to me in early Spring. Makes a wonderful light side salad.

Pac choi-A juicy green variety. We love it raw. A go to snack for Maeve. Also, delicious saute with garlic and onions and a squirt of vinegar or lemon juice on top.

Arugula-Snappy and peppery in flavor. This is a mild arugula and we love it.

Sprouts-Cute little blend of radishes and chois that have a bite. Great on salads, soups or garnish. Just harvest with a scissors.

April 23 2020 Spring Share #1

We have been keeping ourselves busy in the gardens and hoop houses. We decided to jump early with our plantings in the hoop house and take a risk and the weather cooperated…a bounty of fresh greens 2 weeks earlier than last year. Scott had to drape row cover at night to prevent frost damage or even freezing of the new seedlings and transplants and then take it all off in the morning over and over again but so worth it.

All tucked in for the night. 2 layers of fabric just to be safe.

Both houses are fully planted. Rows of leafy greens, beets, turnips, kohlrabi, carrots, fennel and TONS! of Spinach. The heated greenhouse needed it’s temporary extension again when we upgraded the tomatoes last week. We run out of room for a few short weeks each year and Scott created this “temporary” lean-to that does the trick…

Peas are in outside and so is a bed of swiss chard and radishes seeded in….the soil has been prepped in the gardens and Scott is laying plastic for the potatoes and sweet potato rows now. Hopefully by the end of next week all rows will be set and we can start transplanting a few early crops.

SPRING SHARE #1

A few changes to our routine due to COVID19….All shares will be a no contact home delivery in non returnable packaging…we will continue this as long as needed through the season to keep all of us safe and healthy.

Spinach-This is the last harvest of the spinach we planted last August. Next week we switch to Spinach planted March 1 in hoop 2.

This year we are going to follow the late season “bonus share”/ “season extender share” model we practiced at the end of the last 3 season….We loved it and so did our 2017-19 CSA members….! So, no winter share offered this year BUT several fantastic bonus shares will be available for purchase on a weekly basis after the 18 week main season ends-same as 2017-19.

Summer Share #20 October 24th Final Share

Best season ever for us! Thanks to all for sharing and making this “stay at home/urban farm” life possible for our family. We are grateful. The season zipped by and stayed strong all summer long. Thanks for the survey returns from our members. The feedback on these surveys shape future seasons. Our thoughts….. We are pleased with our crops and rotations this year. Broccoli was abundant!, summer onions had a great harvest this season. The peas-just amazing to us what we pulled from the vines. We were thrilled that we were able to provide lettuce every week all season long with great variety. We loved our baby cabbages and the high volume of kohlrabi. Longest harvest window in a long time with the tomatoes this year. Pepper harvest was almost too much this season and we think we may scale back a tiny bit next season. Potatoes were almost too abundant but wonderful. We are bringing back purple potatoes next year too-I finally convinced Scott. A huge Thank you to Scott’s relatives the Raupp Family for the “Squash runway” and allowing us to plant our potatoes and sweet potatoes at your beautiful farm-we could not do this without their wonderful sandy soil. The beans never overwhelmed us and we think we hit just about the right amount. The watermelon vines tanked for some reason with many under ripe melons on the vines that we opted not to harvest. We hoped for more melons but what we did harvest was delicious. A bit of a disappointment. Sweet potatoes also had a lower yield. Again, what we harvested was good but we wanted more. We are going to attempt to lengthen our cucumber rotation a bit this year. We had tons! but they shut down too quickly in our opinion. Our second big rotation of cucumbers never really did much-same as last year. So, we have a better idea to attempt next season. We always want more carrots!-and colorful carrots….the new hoop house will be dedicated to carrots, beets and a few other speciality root crops that we want to pamper and keep our eye on…We are already talking about next season!

COOL FACT-12,133 pounds of produce went home with our CSA members this season.

Summer Share #19 October 17

A golden glow is everywhere.

With the chill of autumn and shorter days the pace slows in the garden. Our conversations shift to reflection of the season and goals for next. With the completion of the hoop house-finally today!!! duties focus to clean up and get the garlic in! Hardy crops remain. Another 100 pounds of brussels sprouts were plucked from our wonderland. What a great crop!

CSA Summer Share #18 October 10

A whirlwind of a week with not a lot of detail…..Maeve and Jennifer picked up squash and pumpkins from the patch and Scott plugged away at the hoop house every extra minute we had. Perfect weather for the duties. Frost is coming-maybe even snow on Sunday! And we scurry about to get these last duties completed.

And the shade cloth finally came off the hoop house….

Snack Pack

WHAT IS IN YOUR SHARE-SPINACH, LEEKS, POTATOES, BEAUTY HEART RADISH, WINTER SQUASH, ORNAMENTAL PUMPKIN/SQUASH, MINI LUNCHBOX PEPPERS, ITALIAN FRY PEPPER, PARSLEY, AND SEASON END SURVEY

Spinach-Another great (and bountiful) spinach harvest from the hoop house. Enjoy!

Leeks-The last of our leek harvest. And whenever I harvest these I think….these were started from seed in February.

Leeks cleaned in the field ready to be washed.

Potatoes-A fluffy dry variety called superior. Perfect for potato leek soup.

Beauty heart radish-not too hot and a pretty surprise when you cut into it.

Winter Squash-1 for snack, 2 for full…..members choose whatever they wish.

Winter Squash all washed and ready for CSA Members to select a beauty.

Ornamental pumpkin/squash-Maeve and Jennifer brought truckloads in from the field. Beautiful and unusual ornamentals.

Mini sweet pepper mix-We picked the last of the peppers with the expected frost on Friday night. A great pepper year.

Italian Fry Pepper-the last are from the field and we have a bounty for this week and next.
